Not many people know there used to be a very large body of water on the border of Sangmu District and Geumho District. This was the Un-chun reservoir. More than 65 years ago, when Korea was under Japanese colonialization, the filling of Gyungyang Lake (경양호) began. Finally, when the rubble from the leveling Mt. Taebong (태봉산) was dumped into Gyungyang-lake, both the mountain and the lake disappeared.
This Un-chun reservoir was about to disappear when people thought it is an obstacle for developing and expanding Gwangju. Originally, the place where Un-chun reservoir is located was on the outskirts of Gwangju. People around this area were farmers who needed lots of water for rice cultivation.

This year due to lots of rainfall, this reservoir is full of water. The more water the better it looks when lotus flowers bloom on the surface of the reservoir. When autumn comes, along with Chonnam National University, this reservoir is considered as the number one place to visit at night to see lotus leaves covering a lake. When seeing lotus flowers with purple color, it purifies the mind. After raining, pure
clean water is trapped in the leaves. Pay a visit in a hot summer night with your family.
