Where slums once stood there is a park

I like the name Pureun Gil (푸른길), which means green walk or green way in Korean. About 10 years ago the former location of Dongsung high school (동성고) was near the railway. This area was full of bush and it was a home for runaway students before it was reborn as Pureun Gil. There are still houses along the old railway tracks. Imagine noisy trains passing by your house within the reach of your window. It would be awful, wouldn’t it? As you walk by Sansu-dong and Gyerim-dong(계림동), you can easily find houses which have suffered from the noise of trains for several decades.

This railway played a major role before Gwangju sprawled out. What we call ‘downtown’, Chungjangro(충장로) and Geumnamro(금남로) used be very center of Gwnagju. From there Pureun Gil is a 15-minutes’ walk. As Gwangju expanded in size, the railway became a barrier between the houses facing one another, as well as for commuters who drive cars. The railway became a hotly debated issue and, finally, turned into Pureun Gil.

Many citizens around this area have contributed or planted trees on Korean Arbor Day, 5th of April. Some organizations built plenty of benches along the way. Before the Pureun Gil project was done, with its 8meter-wide path, some people doubted its usage and wondered if it could be a park where locals visit and come into use. Now every day, this path is full of people in school uniforms, men in suit, halmonis(grandmothers), and ajumas(married, old ladies) in black caps and long wristlets doing power-walking. It surely plays a practical role and has improved the rate of green space in Gwangju.

Once a burden of city and slums, now, turned into a gathering place for locals. Still we have couple of sections left to cover, we expect to see another union and harmony between the old railway and the people around it who had to bear and endure its thunder-like sounds.
